Bryan Cunningham:

In his third season at the University of Central Florida men’s soccer, head coach Bryan Cunningham continues to build the program with consistent improvement on and off the soccer field.

In Cunningham’s second season in charge, the Knights improved their win total by three from the previous season to seven in 2008. Despite playing an extremely challenging slate that included 2007 national runner-up Ohio State and a ranked South Florida squad, the seven wins equaled the most by a UCF team since 2005.

After assisting in the continued development of the soccer programs at Pfeiffer, Appalachian State and South Carolina, Cunningham first joined the UCF men’s soccer program as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in May 2005 after serving in a similar position at South Carolina for three years. Cunningham’s first recruiting class was ranked in the top 30 nationally by College Soccer News and first in the south region by StudentSports.com. By the end of 2006, three of those players garnered All-Conference USA honors.

Following the resignation of Brent Erwin in January 2007, Cunningham was appointed interim head coach before being formally named to the position a month later.  In his first season at the helm, Cunningham helped the offense score 24 goals, the most tallies since 2002. The Knights also claimed the New Mexico Invitational and the UCF Fall Classic titles en route to a 4-12-2 record. In the classroom, a total of 15 Knights earned spots on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, and those returning for 2008 hold an average grade-point average over a 3.0.

In Cunningham’s two seasons as head coach at UCF, three players have gone on to play professionally, three Knights have earned spots on the all-conference teams and two players have garnered C-USA all-freshman team accolades. Following the 2008 season, goalkeeper Sean Johnson was chosen to represent his country on the U-20 United States National Team.
Over the summer of 2008, Cunningham was invited to Euro 2008 as a guest of the Swedish FA, Malmo FF and the Northern Ireland Schoolboys. At the event, he served as a research panelist for Sweden vs. Greece and Croatia vs. Germany.

As a member of the South Carolina staff, Cunningham recruited several highly-touted student-athletes into the program. Among his recruits were Mike Sambursky, a 2007 draftee of Major League Soccer (MLS) Champion Houston Dynamo; Makan Hislop, captain of the U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National Team; and Brad Guzan, an All-America and No. 2 pick in the 2005 MLS Super Draft.

Prior to his stint at USC, Cunningham was an assistant coach at Appalachian State for five years under the tutelage of Southern Conference Coach of Year award winners T.J. Kostecky and Aidan Heaney. At ASU, he worked with eight All-South Region honorees, a SoCon Player of the Year, 13 All-SoCon selections and a College Soccer News Freshman All-American. ASU also boasted an Academic All-American and 18 players on the league’s All-Academic Team.

In addition to his coaching experience at the collegiate level, he was also active in the North Carolina and South Carolina Olympic Development Programs.

On the international level, Cunningham presently serves as an advisor for the Northern Ireland U-18 Schoolboys and managers Bob Ramsey and Andy McMorran. He has completed his UEFA-B license during the summer of 2009.

An avid believer in having his program give back to the community, Cunningham has been active promoting youth soccer in the Seminole and Orange County school systems, as well as at three area Christian schools and the YMCA. For the past two seasons, he has been the guiding force in the UCF men’s soccer team’s involvement in the annual Youth Sports Festival.

A native of Philadelphia, Cunningham was a four-year letterwinner and three-time captain for the Pfeiffer University soccer team. The Falcons won two Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. He was also a four-time Scholar-Athlete and Dean’s List honoree, while appearing in the Who’s Who among American College Students.

Cunningham, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communications, resides in Orlando with his wife Amy, daughter Elyn Elizabeth (four) and son Alexander Michael (one).

Mauricio Ruiz

A former UCF Knight from 2001-02, Mauricio Ruiz rejoined the program as a volunteer assistant coach for 2008. After one season in which he helped the Knights to a semifinals appearance in the Conference USA Tournament, he was promoted to assistant coach in Spring 2009.

He was part of the first conference championship team in 2002, helping the Knights reach the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time as well. Ruiz played in every game as a freshman and started seven games as a sophomore, recording eight goals and four assists during this two year career at UCF.  Ruiz finished his collegiate career at Stetson, where he played two seasons and won an Atlantic Sun championship with the Hatters.

During the 2007-08 season, Ruiz suited up with the inaugural Orlando Sharks of the Major Indoor Soccer League, playing 27 out of 30 games and recording seven goals and four assists as a rookie.
Ruiz is a 2005 graduate of Stetson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electronic business technology. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ruiz moved to the United States in 1996 with his parents and two older sisters.

James Prosser

With the Knights, Prosser is involved in all aspects of the program, including team and individual training with a focus on attacking play, recruiting and various administrative duties.

Prosser joined the Cardinals prior to the 2006 season after playing for the Minnesota Thunder of the United Soccer League 1st Division from 2004-05. During that time, he was a site coordinator for the Minnesota Thunder camps, overseeing more than 30 sites in the metropolitan Minneapolis area and surrounding cities. In addition to playing for the Thunder, Prosser also coached youth soccer at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Academy, the Thunder’s youth soccer academy in Fairbault, Minn., the Wings Soccer Club and was the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at the Academy of Holy Angels.

Before moving to the Gopher State, Prosser played for the Indiana Blast, a United Soccer League 1st Division team, from 2001-03, where he played in 75 games with 46 starts, scoring five goals and dishing out seven assists. He served as a coach for the Blast Soccer Camps and headed the Crusade for Health, conducting clinics and appearances on behalf of the `Blast and Me, Tobacco Free’ program. Prosser also coached for several area youth clubs, including the Noblesville Rowdies, Greenfield Strikers and the Indy Revolution.

He spent a year in Wilmington, N.C., in 2000, playing in 22 games with eight starts in helping the Wilmington Hammerheads, a United Soccer League 2nd Division team, capture the Southern Conference Championship and make a quarterfinal appearance in the US Open Cup. He began his professional career in 1999 as a member of the Myrtle Beach Sea Dawgs.

Prosser also has trained internationally with the National Soccer League of Australia’s Northern Spirit, the Finnish Premier Division’s HJK, the Dutch Eredivise First Divisions’ Roda JC and the German Bundesliga’s Werder Bremen.

Prosser is a 2001 graduate of Butler University, where he earned a bachelor’s of arts in education. He played in three NCAA tournaments as a collegian, including two appearances in the round of 16. His teams also claimed three Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships. He finished his college career ranked ninth on the school’s all-time points list.

Bryan Cunningham’s Central Florida Soccer Camp at UCF is one of the premier soccer instructional camps in the country. Coach Bryan Cunningham and his dedicated staff of coaches will provide an opportunity to better understand the game of soccer. The camp program is designed for those who have a strong desire to improve their abilities as soccer players. Located on the campus and fields at UCF in Orlando, players will participate in a challenging but fun week of soccer instruction.

Players will be placed into groups according to their age and playing ability. They will receive both individual and group instruction. The Day Camp is based upon the morning session of our extremely popular Central Florida Knights Soccer Camp overnight program. Special attention will be placed on technique and skill development. The staff for the day camp will be experienced in both teaching and demonstrating the skills necessary for a player to improve to his or her full potential. The Day Camp is perfect for the player who wants to improve in a fun environment. There is a limited amount of space available for the Day Camp so please register early.

During the morning sessions, we will teach and correctly demonstrate the skills needed to improve the player’s individual technique. Individual creativity is encouraged among our campers in order to develop confidence and a more positive attitude toward the game of soccer. The afternoon session concentrates on tactical development using small-sided games that will allow the players to learn in a game environment. The evenings at UCF consist of tournaments with full-sided games. During these games, the players are able to demonstrate the technique and tactics learned during the day. The Elite Camp strives to teach the campers the skills that they need to improve, as well as, teach and demonstrate how to use those skills in the game. A high level of competition, plus outstanding instruction, offers an unparalleled learning opportunity.

The Goalkeeper is a specialized position that needs specific attention to detail on a daily basis. Our experienced goalkeeping staff will teach you the key technical, tactical, psychological, and physical aspects of this crucial position. The Central Florida Knights Goalkeeper Camp has created a challenging program that pushes all levels of Goalkeepers to improve. The morning session will consist of specific, detailed training on the techniques of goalkeeping, which include catching, diving, breakaways, crosses, and footwork. The afternoon lessons will consist of the basic tactical decisions of goalkeeping, such as, positioning, distribution, and communication. In the evening, the goalkeepers will join the field players for full field games. These match-related activities provide the goalkeepers an opportunity to blend technical fundamentals with tactical decision making. At the end of the week, each goalkeeper will be given a goalkeeper evaluation that will provide feedback on how they can improve. Goalkeepers can be confident they are getting the highest level of training possible.
